Tunisian-born AI startup InstaDeep’s big bet on Rwanda, with the opening of a new office in Kigali, was just the beginning of its ambitious plans to reshape African tech in a strategic move to expand its presence on the continent. In the months following the initial announcement, the company has taken significant steps to solidify its presence and impact on the continent’s artificial intelligence ecosystem. This development has come on the heels of InstaDeep’s $680 million acquisition by German biotech giant BioNTech in January 2023, further solidifying the company’s role as a key player in driving AI innovation across Africa.

At the heart of InstaDeep’s expansion and commitment to the region lies its recent strategic job postings in Kigali on its official careers page, seeking talented individuals to fill key roles such as Software Engineer (Backend), Research Scientist for Large Language Model (LLM) Alignment, and Research Engineer for LLM Alignment. These newly advertised positions also paint a picture of the company’s focus and priorities on cutting-edge research in areas like decision-making, generative modelling, and computational biology, which align with Rwanda’s vision of leveraging AI to drive socio-economic development and InstaDeep’s commitment to building a formidable AI research hub in the country.

The Research Scientist for the Large Language Model (LLM) Alignment role, in particular, offers a glimpse into InstaDeep’s aspirations. The company is seeking the brightest minds across Africa to join its Kigali-based team, tasked with exploring the intersection of decision-making, generative modelling, and life sciences. Their mission is to help shape the next generation of generative AI technologies, ensuring that these powerful systems are competent and aligned with the diverse preferences and needs of the global community.

Complementing this highly specialised research position is the open call for skilled Research Engineers to join InstaDeep’s team in Kigali. These individuals will play a key role in driving AI innovation in personalised healthcare, collaborating with the company’s renowned researchers and engineers to push the boundaries of generative modelling, AI safety, and beyond.

By establishing a strong research presence in Kigali, InstaDeep is not only tapping into the immense talent pool in Rwanda and the region but also positioning itself to develop AI solutions that can have a tangible impact on the lives of Africans. This mission also aligns strategically with Rwanda’s ambitious plans to position itself as a leading destination for developing and deploying trustworthy AI technologies.

In April 2023, the country launched its National AI Policy, outlining clear, strategic and priority six areas, including AI literacy, infrastructure, data strategy, and the ethical implementation of AI, with a significant investment of $76.5 million needed over the next five years. This has made Rwanda ranked as one of the top ten African countries on the AI readiness index by Oxford Insights. According to the Index, Mauritius is the African country most ready for AI, scoring 53.38 points out of 100 and becoming the 57th most ready country worldwide — after also being the first African country to publish a national AI strategy in 2018.

InstaDeep’s footprint in Rwanda also builds upon its parent company, BioNTech’s first state-of-the-art vaccine manufacturing facility established on any African soil in Kigali. This further strengthens the its commitment to the country and the broader African market in shaping the continent’s AI-driven future.

As the startup continues to expand its team, the African AI ecosystem is set to benefit from the its expertise, resources, and global network to realise the continent’s potential in artificial intelligence and lead the charge in the global technological revolution. As the world watches with bated breath, expert sources in TechGyant’s network “believe the future of AI in Africa has indeed never looked brighter than now.”
